Spirituality course: week 1

In order to begin the path of spiritual growth you need to know where you are starting from.

And remember; even a point of view with which you disagree can bring you closer to your inner truth.

(from Tomorrow's God, Neale Donald Walsch p 232-233)

Our goal in this course is to find our own inner truth regarding who we are as spiritual beings. So before I say anything else, we're going to start with a fun assignment!

The assignment
You are to make a list of your spiritual beliefs. Include ideas about good, evil, right, wrong, origins of life, the afterlife, reincarnation, sacred texts you may or may not follow, rules or laws you believe, everything you can think of. This is going to be quite the effort, but it necessary for the journey we are about to embark on.

After you've finished this list, or reached a temporary stopping point, go back and write about how each specific belief affects your behavior. You may have never done this before, so take your time. For example, if you believe killing is wrong, how do you live that belief? Do you then believe war is wrong? If not, where do you draw the line? These are the questions you need to ask yourself.

This assignment will take a lot of deep thought. I want your beliefs, and not what others have told you to believe. You may find that things you thought you believed are not beliefs anymore. Or you may find contradictions in your beliefs that you didn't notice. You should have already looked at your beliefs a bit in Self Awareness, but this is going to be more in depth. Few of us examine our beliefs this closely, so the act will take some time and effort. If you find this activity difficult, stop and ask yourself why. The answer to this question is just as important and useful as any others we will ask because they will point back to your core beliefs.

I am going to push you in this course, so be aware of that now. Short, nice sounding answers will get you nowhere, at least not if spiritual growth and awareness is what you desire. Explain yourself fully and clearly to get the most out of this experience.

Because this assignment is so long I recommend keeping paper on you so you can jot down ideas when they come to you. Try to accomplish this task in a week, though you are allowed to continue to work throughout the course (and beyond) Even if you know you are not done, post what you have accomplished within a week so we can move on and focus on areas specific to you.

I know this feels a bit overwhelming right now, but do not worry. Be courageous and enjoy the journey of self discovery!
